Operational systems and Java
Students can run the software on any device (desktop, laptop, tablet and if necessary smartphone) and with any operating system. Numworx’s student version does not require Java and works in every modern browser. A teacher’s version of Numworx is available to manage classes, check students’ work and to do other teachers tasks as well as school admin operations. For this version you only need a PC/Mac desktop or laptop or a tablet computer with webbrowser. To adapt modules Numworx Author is required. This software can be downloaded here.
Accounts and (school)administration
Click on 'Forgot password?' in the log-in page. The user name and e-mail address must match the information submitted originally to Numworx/DWO. For students, if your account was made by a teacher then that teacher can restore your password.
If the students opened their own accounts they can change their password themselves. Students who have forgotten their password can apply for a new one by clicking on 'Forgot password?' in the log-in page. If the teacher opened the student accounts, the way to change the password is via 'My classes and then the button with little figures after the class's name'. Click on the pen in the student’s corresponding edit column, then fill in a new password in the pop-up.
There is no quick way to find this in Numworx/DWO. In principle the schooladmin should be the contact person who originally registered the school. The key codes which the school’s contact person received allow multiple schooladmin accounts to be made for a school.
As schooladmin you can delete an entire group of students from the system by selecting the class’s student summary. Click first on 'My classes' and then the button with the figures after the class’s name. Then select the students you want to remove and the button at the top 'Delete selected'. This removes students from the class but not the school. To delete a class: Click on 'My classes' and then on the Delete button after the class's name.
Select the students from the class, then select a school. Click on the button 'Copy selected to schoolclass'.

If you subscribed before September 2016 then you do not need to do anything. Your subscription is renewed automatically each year and the new year begins at the start of the new school year. It you subscribed after September 2016, you still do not need to do anything. Your subscription is renewed automatically and the new year starts the following year. The fee is automatically deducted from your account at the start of the new period, or you will receive a bill, depending on the choice you made when you subscribed.
A Numworx subscription for educational institutions runs for one year, starting from the moment the subscription was submitted. Subscriptions are renewed automatically for a year unless otherwise instructed. To unsubscribe send instructions to that effect in writing (email) at least one day before the subscription is due to update automatically.
Excel allows users to choose colours for cells under certain conditions. A file to enable you to change the Numworx/DWO colour scheme is available here to download. Copy the results from DWO (using 'Copy to Clipboard' in the result column), click the top cell, left, in Excel and paste the results using Ctrl+V.
Testing with Numworx
You can copy an existing activity and use it to build your own test. The way to copy an existing activity and to adapt the copy is described in chapter 12 of the Numworx manual. Instructions on how to create a completely new activity are available in the Manual Designing in the Digitale Mathematics Environment Part 1 and Part 3.
Yes, you can make sure a test is only visible for a particular time, during class for example. When you assign a test module to your class you can set a start and finish time. See chapter 6.4 in the Numworx manual for more information.
There is currently an effort to make this option available in the present HTML5 version of Numworx. It is possible to set tests in an isolated environment in the Java environment of DWO. When assigning the test module to the class, click ‘normal’ in the 'kind' column. This brings up the option 'secured', which allows you to select the desired effect. Students who try to use a program other than DWO receive a warning. They must return to the test immediately or it closes within seconds. In that case they may be able to restart the test but the teacher will be able to see in the results that the test was interrupted.
Adjusting the material (Editor)
As a teacher you cannot change standard activities. But you can copy a module or activity to your own school environment. Note that an activity is always part of a module, so if you only want the activity, you need to create your own module in which to hold it. Once the module or activity is in your school environment you can click on the activity and select ‘Bewerken’ at the top of the window. Click here to see all the options of the author environment.
Modules which you have changed are in your school environment. All the teachers at your school can see them if they have a teacher account from your school. Note that they can also make changes. So make clear rules about this at your school. For example, give each teacher a personal directory, or create a directory for the academic year or level. If necessary you can divide the directory even further. Your students can only see the modules you have adjusted when you assign these to their class.
We are tremendously grateful to be kept informed of any errors that may occur in the material. We correct the material and make sure the new version is ready for the coming school year. If you want to use a corrected version straight away you will need to copy the standard module to your own school environment. Then you can adjust the copied module and remove the error. For specific help about making changes to a module or activity please see the Manual Designing in the Digitale Mathematics Environment Part 1 and Part 3.
The position of the brackets is crucial. Placing the brackets, for example #ax+b# instead of #a#x+#b# prevents expressions such as "1x + 0". If a=1 and b=0 the result is x. Read more about where to place the brackets in chapter 7c of the Manual Designing in the Digital Mathematics Environment, Part 3.

When designing an activity, you can make a calculator available in the DME to students. How to design this is explained in the Manual Designing in the Digital Mathematics Environment, Part 1.
From DWO to Numworx
With the growing number of users the demands made on the platform, on availability, the helpdesk and how to deal with requests and queries increased. The DWO team is also keen to offer even more students a chance to use a digital environment to study mathematics. These market forces and ambitions are incompatible with the mission of Utrecht University and Freudenthal institute. So having discussed the matter thoroughly, it was decided that DWO should become an independent organization.
Numworx Solutions BV began in September 2016. The collaboration with Utrecht University will continue in the coming years to ensure a smooth transition to independence.
Yes. DWO will eventually disappear. From September Numworx is the company’s name and in the coming period DWO’s name and address will gradually be replaced by Numworx.
No. The platform, helpdesk and trainings will all be part of Numworx as of September 2016. In the 2016-2017 academic year, you will be clients of Numworx.
Users with the current (standard) subscription can always submit questions using the contact form. In August 2017, Premium subscription holders will have their own helpdesk to answer questions and receive suggestions.
Numworx has deliberately chosen to retain the basic subscription rate at its current level to ensure that the platform remains available to as many as possible. The basic fee of 250 euro is practically unchanged, raised by a mere 2 percent a year to keep up with inflation. Numworx plans to introduce a Premium subscription for users with more extensive wishes.
From the start, Numworx is developed and run by the same team. Because the company aims to expand, new personnel will join in due course.
No. Numworx and Freudenthal Institute remain closely allied, working together on research, product development and promoting the teaching of mathematics.
Numworx’s mission is to make high quality digital course material for mathematics and other sciences available worldwide. Social Enterprise is a business philosophy that places the business’s role in society at its core. Numworx is developing into a business run on sound economic principles yet where its social mission is more important than profit.
Your assignments will continue to function and they remain yours. We are considering opening a content store to allow teachers and developers to exploit their assignments. Would you be interested in that? Let us know!
